When we think of family trips to Florida, we often think about Orlando, Tampa, Fort Lauderdale, or Sarasota. While those are all beautiful getaway destinations, Key West is a gorgeous, small island located in the Florida Keys. The size of this island makes it less overwhelming and its tropical vibes and historical aspects make it an unforgettable place to visit.
It’s almost impossible for you and your little ones to be bored on this island as you can go snorkeling, parasailing, dolphin watching, and more. Aside from water sports, there are lots of historical monuments, great places to eat, lively tours, and friendly locals. It is also a 3-hour bus ride from Miami so you can always stay there and come visit Key West for the day!

As a little kid, I always loved aquariums and I still do! Getting to witness the beautiful sea life animals is something that should not be taken for granted. At Key West’s Aquarium, they have a shark exhibit where you can actually feed the sharks!
They also have a sea turtle conservation tour and a jellyfish exhibit. It’s definitely an unforgettable experience as the aquarium is interactive and full of beautiful sea creatures.
3. Dolphin Watching Tour
Catch a boat ride on the beautiful Florida Keys water and watch dolphins swim through the clear water. Dolphin Watch by Honest Eco is a tour company in Key West rated 4.9 stars and their tours are sustainable and aimed toward spreading the value of conservation.
4. Key West Butterfly and Nature Conservatory

5. Dry Tortugas National Park
Take a boat ride out to Dry Tortugas National Park which is home to a 19th Century Fort and crystal clear water. This is a perfect park to go to for both fun activities and a little bit of history. The park has seven small islands which give you and your family plenty to explore! There is even snorkeling available which will allow you to see all the exquisite marine life and coral reefs.

7. Ernest Hemingway’s House
Ernest Hemingway was a respected American Novelist who passed away in 1961. He left behind his house in Key West which has now been transformed into a museum honoring his life.
Hemingway’s house is filled with many cats which is an homage to the six-toed cat that he had as a pet. Seeing a luxurious house from the 1930s in Key West is a very unique experience and makes for a beautiful picture as it is located on garden grounds.
8. Smather’s Beach
If you’re going to the island of Key West chances are you and your family love the beach! One of the best beaches in Key West is Smather’s Beach. It is filled with palm trees and clear water. Take a beach day to relax and enjoy the beautiful scenery at this beach!
9. The Southernmost Point
The Southernmost Point is the perfect monument for your family picture in Key West. Of course, it is a popular tourist attraction, however, it is definitely worth seeing as it is a staple to a Key West vacation.
The Southernmost Point is a buoy located in Key West since it is famous for being the Southernmost city in the continental U.S. Although this is more of a photo op than an activity, there is plenty to see and do around this area.
10. Try out some Key Lime Pie
Did you know that Key Lime Pie was invested in Key West? It is a popular dessert in Key West that can be found at most restaurants, bakeries, and cafes. Even if you have had it before, there is nothing like tasting it right from the island itself. Blue Heaven is a great place to try some!
