Best Weekend Trips for Florida Families

St. Augustine

Historic St. Augustine is known as the oldest city in the United States. A perfect getaway for the family to experience such sights as the Castillo de San Marcos fort, the oldest masonry fortress built in the U.S. used to protect the Spanish. You can also find the oldest schoolhouse in America, which is exciting for children to see as they compare the old technologies used in the 18th century compared to their present day education. Hop on a trolley and let the tour guides do all the work as you sit back and enjoy the beautiful city of St. Augustine while you’re guided along all the stops.

Savannah, Georgia

Speaking of historic towns and trolleys, Savannah, Georgia is another fun weekend getaway for Florida families and is close enough to take a road trip to. This town is full of history lessons and beautiful antebellum era homes, maintained in its original architecture. It is known as a haunted city that offers many different ghost tours. But don’t worry, they’re not that scary and they offer family friendly ghost tours. This city is also home to SCAD (The Savannah College of Art and Design). So if you enjoy art, this is a particularly artsy city.

Orlando

The not so historic, newly built city of Orlando is full of things to do. From the theme parks (Check out my blog posts on everything related to Disney World), to kayaking and swimming at Wekiva Springs State Park nearby. Orlando is the city for theme parks, home to Walt Disney World, Universal Studios, and Legoland. iDrive in Orlando is also home to many tourist attractions such as the Ripley’s Believe it or Not Museum and Madame Tussaud’s Wax Museum. There’s a reason Orlando attracts so many tourists. They dominate the theme park industry with all there is to offer. 

Space Coast

A perfect opportunity for the family to have a memorable family vacation is a trip to the Space Coast. Take the kids to The Kennedy Space Center or take a trip to the Brevard Zoo. And there’s the Indialantic Boardwalk at the beach. Maybe if you’re lucky you’ll get to see a space shuttle take off!

St. Petersburg

St. Pete is a great trip to take for beach lovers as well! The St. Pete beach is relaxing yet eccentric for how small it is. The locals are very nice and are somewhat bohemian. The vibes are very relaxed and fun and family friendly. There’s a lot of events and festivals that take place throughout the year that are fun for the whole family. And be sure to check out the Salvidor Dali Museum if you have the chance!

The Florida Keys

If you love nature then this is the vacation destination for you. 

The keys are a series of islands that stretch for 120 miles, starting at Key Largo.

At Key Largo, take a tour of John Pennekamp State Park in a glass-bottom boat or take a walk through the Dagny Johnson Key Largo Hammock Botanical State Park.

At Key West, you can see the Key West Butterfly and Nature Conservatory, tour the town on the Conch Train, or take an adventure-filled boat ride on a banana boat.

Throughout the Keys, you’ll find a series of opportunities to snorkel, go fishing, go boating, see any number of attractions, and relax on the beach.
