Surviving the Elements: What to Do When Florida Weather Doesn’t Cooperate at Disney

If you’ve ever watched one of those old Visit Florida commercials, you might remember the scene: the sun slips behind a tiny cloud, and the beachgoers dramatically sigh, “It was better yesterday.” That’s Florida for you—sunny one minute, soaking the next.

While you can count on warm weather during your Walt Disney World vacation, Florida’s climate has a flair for the dramatic. Heat, cold snaps, and almost clockwork afternoon downpours are all part of the experience. But that doesn’t mean you need to let the weather ruin your Disney magic.

Here’s how to be ready for whatever the Sunshine State throws at you:

☀️ When It’s HOT (and It Will Be)

Florida heat is no joke, especially in the summer months. Here’s how to beat it:

Stay Hydrated
You’ll find bottled water throughout the parks, but it adds up quickly. Bring a collapsible water bottle to refill throughout the day (free cups of ice water are available at any counter-service restaurant). Bonus tip: freeze water bottles overnight so they stay cooler longer in your bag!

Start Early
The hottest part of the day is early afternoon, so plan to hit the parks at rope drop. By the time the sun’s at its peak, you’ll have checked off your must-dos and can escape the heat in an air-conditioned restaurant, pool, or back at your hotel for a refreshing nap.

Dress Smart
Moisture-wicking clothes are your best friend. If you’re wearing dresses or shorts, pack bike shorts and use body glide or powder to prevent discomfort. Never wear brand-new shoes and always pack more than one pair—along with plenty of Band-Aids, just in case.

🧥 When It’s COLD (Yes, Really)

Believe it or not, Florida does get chilly—especially from November to March.

Layer Up
Pack a warm sweater or jacket even if the forecast says 75 and sunny. Mornings and evenings can be surprisingly brisk, and you’ll be glad you have options when the sun dips. Layering is key since midday can still bring a bit of that Florida warmth.

🌧️ When It RAINS (Which It Will)

Afternoon storms are almost a daily occurrence—sometimes they last 20 minutes, sometimes longer. Either way, be ready:

Poncho Power
Those cheap, lightweight Dollar Store ponchos? Lifesavers. They’re easy to carry and toss when the rain stops. I keep extras to cover strollers, sit on wet benches, or keep us dry on water rides. Disney sells reusable versions too, but it’s always smart to come prepared.

Smart Footwear
Wet sneakers = misery. If rain is in the forecast, opt for sandals that can handle moisture and won’t become slippery—Tevas, Crocs, or my personal favorite, Ahnu sandals, are all great options.

Plan Around the Storm
Save indoor attractions, shows, or shopping for the afternoon. When I create custom touring plans for clients, I always build in “anytime” activities during this window so you can dodge the worst of the heat, crowds, and weather.
