Disney Resort Profiles: The Cabins at Disney’s Fort Wilderness Resort

 

Nestled on 750 acres of pine and cypress forest, Disney’s Fort Wilderness Resort & Campground is filled with wildlife such as armadillos, ducks, rabbits, and deer. This Moderate Resort welcomes you to delight in scenic woodland trails, rootin’ tootin’ entertainment, heart country eats, and  exciting pool areas. Enjoy horseback riding, evening Disney movies with Chip and Dale, hiking trails, and of course access to all the activities and benefits of an on-site Disney vacation.

Fort Wilderness is a destination in itself. There is so much to do that you could spend a wonderful vacation here without ever stepping foot into a theme park. It can be a good alternative to one bedroom villas but I don’t like it as much as the Art of Animation family suites because of the sleeping arrangements (bunk beds in master) and only one bathroom. 

Even if it is still a bit higher to stay onsite, the benefits can far outweigh the added cost. I have laid out those benefits for you to see how staying at a Disney resort is a good value for you in my blog “Benefits to Staying at a Disney Resort.”

Room Options:

Cabins:

•  There are 407 rustic styled air-conditioned cabins on site, including 13 handicap accessible cabins. 

• The cabins can accommodate up to 6 guests + 1 baby, in a crib.

• Each cabin has one bedroom, one bathroom, a full kitchen, dining area and a living room area with a couch.

• Although this is a campground, the cabins receive daily maid service just like the other Disney World hotels.

Campsites:

• There are 788 campsites with 20 camping loops.

• Each site is surrounded by trees and brush to allow for some privacy from your neighbors. All of the sites are “back-in” sites that can accommodate vehicles between 25 – 60 feet in length.

• There are showers, and coin laundry facilities available here as well.

Join the Pioneer Hall Players for 2 hours of rousing Wild West dancing, singing, and zany vaudeville comedy.

Trail’s End Restaurant (Table Service) 

Rustle up some hearty vittles at this frontier buffet in the comfortably rustic Pioneer Hall at Trail’s End Restaurant. 

The Chuck Wagon (Snack Bar)

At the Chuck Wagon, sit by the campfire and Disney’s Fort Wilderness Campground and roast marshmallows or even make your own s’ mores!

Meadow Snack Bar 

At Meadow Snack Bar, you can relax by the Fort Wilderness pool and enjoy a snack or a light meal!  Open from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Activities 

Take a dip or go down the slide in the Ol’ Meadow Swimmin’ Hole located near the campground. Need some relaxation time from the parks? Relax in the hot tub at the Wilderness Pool in the cabins area. If you have a child, there is a wading pool and water play area. There is also a children’s playground, two video arcades, tennis courts, marina/boat rental, canoe or kayak rental, bike rental, and fishing. You can play shuffleboard or horseshoes. You can take archery lessons, enjoy horse-drawn carriage rides, horseback riding & pony rides, wagon hayrides, and even petting farms. One of my favorite activities is the evening campfires with movies and Chip & Dale.

Activities and programs are subject to change. Although the activities vary by day and by resort, above is an example of some of the trivia, arts and crafts, dance parties, games, and bingo you might find. 

Fort Wilderness also hosts Movies Under the Stars.

Transportation:

Disney’s bus service is available to and from this resort to theme parks, water parks, plus Disney Springs. A water launch, which docks near Pioneer Hall, transports guests to the Magic Kingdom, as well as the Wilderness Lodge, and the Contemporary Resort.

There are numerous internal bus system stops located around the resort. The internal buses transport guests throughout the Fort Wilderness resort between 7 a.m. and 2 a.m.

These times are approximate, provided to give you an idea of average travel times. Please plan on up to a 20-minute wait for Disney transportation in addition to walking time to resort or theme park transportation stops.

Magic Kingdom – 16 minutes by bus, 23 minutes by boat, 23 minutes by car (with transfers)

Epcot – 27 minutes by bus, 18 by car

Disney’s Hollywood Studios – 25 minutes by bus, 19 by car

Animal Kingdom – 28 minutes, 24 by car

Disney Springs – 30 minutes by bus, 19 by car

Blizzard Beach Water Park – 27 minutes by bus, 22 minutes by car

Typhoon Lagoon Water Park – 27 minutes by bus, 15 minutes by car

Tips 

If you have more than two adults and are staying in the Cabins at Fort Wilderness, consider requesting a loop and cabin close to a convenience station. You will have access to additional bathroom and shower facilities which makes getting ready in the morning much easier! Laundry facilities are there, too! Remember, though, room requests aren’t guaranteed, but Disney will do its best to honor them.

Want convenience? Rent a golf cart during your stay. Not only can you get around the resort property more easily, but you can drive and park it at the bus stop to the parks. No need to rely on the timing of internal transportation, although we found we never waited more than five minutes or so for an internal bus. Just remember to bring something fun to identify your cart among all the others!

There is a grocery delivery service provided by Disney at the cabins for a small fee. Or you can use an external service like Instacart, Garden Grocer, or Shipt. 

Storage is a little tricky for seven large suitcases, so be prepared if you’re bringing many large bags!

Quick Service at the Meadow Snack Bar closes early, so getting a late-night bite can be tricky if you don’t have your own supplies.
