Today, I am taking a little bit of a departure from my usual tips and tricks to share a little more about myself. I am so excited to be celebrating the first anniversary of Showcase the World Travel and I am SO glad that the parks have reopened! When I canceled my planned April trip I was missing Disney terribly, my husband and I played a silly game where we shared our Perfect Disney Day. What if Disney only opened once and was closing again forever what would we do? I hate talking about myself so as I sat down to write an about me post I thought what better way to share more of myself than sharing that perfect day.
Now, I like to enjoy Disney very slowly. I don’t like to plan too much so I can enjoy magic moments. I think this day would be a little more stressful than I would normally plan but I had to get as many of my favorite things in here as possible.
Morning in the Magic Kingdom
There is nothing better than walking down the middle of Main Street USA right when the park opens. But you wouldn’t find me in a line to rush over to Seven Dwarves Mine Train, Space Mountain, or even Peter Pan’s Flight. I would stay right there on Main Street listening to the sounds, smelling the smells. I would enjoy the Dapper Dans perform and I would NOT miss the trolley show. Then I would head over and ride the Jungle Cruise before grabbing one last dole whip.
Lunch at Homecomin’
When I go to Walt Disney World there is a rule for everyone in my travel party, that is you must do/try one new thing each day. You would think this would be hard because I go so often but there is always something new, even for me. Typically it is a new restaurant or a new menu. I love trying these new places or even going somewhere that has been there forever that I haven’t tried yet. I try really hard not to repeat dining experiences… with one MAJOR exception. I go to Chef Art Smith’s Homecomin’ Kitchen every time I can. It consistently blows me away and is one of my favorite restaurants in the world. I could not enjoy my perfect day without my perfect meal from Homecomin, a bloody mary, fried green tomatoes, shrimp & grits, and the hummingbird cake that is to DIE FOR!!
Backstage Tour at Animal Kingdom
My afternoon would be spent at Animal Kingdom, but not riding the attractions, I would do a backstage tour. I absolutely fell in love with Animal Kingdom a few years ago when I did the Caring for Giants tour. A guide brings you backstage to get up and close with the elephants, at the time they had a 6-month cub named Stella and she stole my heart. At least once a year I have done one of the tours they offer. Savor the Savanna is my favorite where you are brought through the safari on a private vehicle and able to enjoy dinner in a boma right in the middle of the attraction with views of the giraffes, elephants, and wildebeests and a walking path to a lion viewing platform. It is such an incredible experience to get to learn the personalities of the animals that millions of people drive by every day. It is this look into how much the keepers care for these animals that makes the park even more special.
Evening at EPCOT
I couldn’t spend one day at Disney without visiting my favorite park, EPCOT, the park that inspired my love of travel. I used to visit Disneyland regularly when I was younger. My aunt lives in Southern California and we would go every time we went to visit her a few times a year. I was already a Disney fan, but when my parents brought me to Walt Disney World in the second grade and I got to experience EPCOT for the first time, I became a travel fan. Being able to visit 11 countries in one day was overwhelming for me. I wanted to learn more about every single one of them, the shy little girl disappeared and I was asking Cast Members everything I could think of about those countries. I knew I had to see these places in real life and a traveler was born. I wouldn’t plan a whole lot other than walking around, soaking in some of my favorite details. If there was a festival I would enjoy trying items from the booths along the way. I would get a cucumber margarita in Mexico, ask for them to pack up some Schoolbread in a to-go container in Norway (it is a great breakfast the next day) and enjoy a limoncello Moscow mule sitting in the courtyard in Italy. I would watch Impressions de France and enjoy a Croque glace (ice cream sandwich made with warm brioche bread) before settling down on a bench in the English gardens and calling it a night.
It is the details and magic moments that make Disney special to me, not the attractions or spectacles. Most of the places that I wouldn’t miss remind me of special moments I have experienced over the years or just have really great food.
