I never thought I would love cruising. My first cruise was just okay. I’m the type of traveler who loves to explore, and spending just a few hours in port never really gave me what I wanted out of a trip.
But then I became a mom. And while cruising still isn’t my favorite way to travel, it has quickly become my daughter’s. She lives her best life on board—and I get to breathe. What changed the game for me? Disney Cruise Line’s private islands.
These stops are the highlight of every itinerary. They feel like a breath of fresh air—the perfect beach day, with just the right amount of time to actually sit still and enjoy it. They offer all the beauty of a beach vacation without only being about the beach. And if, like me, you’re not someone who can sit still in a lounge chair all day, there are plenty of other ways to enjoy yourself.
In fact, now we often choose 3- to 5-night cruises and don’t even get off the ship in other ports—we save our energy for the islands. I’m especially excited about our upcoming sailing on the Disney Destiny, which includes stops at both Castaway Cay and Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point.
While both private islands are magical, they each have their own personality—and it helps to know what sets them apart so you can savor the experience that best suits your family.
Castaway Cay feels like classic Disney—well-themed, efficient, and familiar. It’s easy to navigate and perfectly designed for family ease. The atmosphere is festive and welcoming, with colorful signs, Cast Members waving you in, and a layout that lets you hit the ground running—or lounging.
Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point, Disney’s newest addition in The Bahamas, brings a more immersive, cultural experience. Everything from the architecture to the entertainment has a uniquely Bahamian flair. You’ll see local artists, enjoy performances rooted in tradition, and feel like you’re stepping into a vibrant celebration of island life.
The beaches at both islands are breathtaking—powdery white sand, crystal-clear waters, and plenty of space to spread out. Castaway Cay’s Family Beach is close to all the action, while Serenity Bay offers tranquil seclusion. Lookout Cay’s beaches are vast, with design touches inspired by the landscape and culture, offering scenic beauty with a laid-back vibe.
For families, the shallow entry and calm waters make both islands perfect for young swimmers and sandcastle architects.
Scuttle’s Cove (Castaway) and Sebastian’s Cove (Lookout) are like little slices of magic where kids can run, play, and create under the supervision of trained Disney counselors. These beachside clubs are enclosed and secure, giving parents peace of mind—and a little time to sip that cocktail in peace.
Younger kids love the interactive water zones. Castaway’s splash areas feel like a continuation of the ship’s aqua play, while Lookout Cay’s water zones are more stylized, reflecting the artistic flair of Bahamian design. Both are shaded, safe, and close to family beach areas.
At Castaway Cay, Pelican Plunge sits just offshore with two water slides and a massive water bucket. It’s a splashy favorite for older kids and parents alike. Lookout Cay doesn’t have a traditional slide yet, but the water play areas are expansive and beautifully themed, offering sensory fun in a more grounded setting.
Both islands offer a sanctuary for parents. Serenity Bay at Castaway Cay is a peaceful, adults-only beach with hammocks, drink service, and space to unwind. Tranquil Hideaway at Lookout Cay offers a similar escape, but with the added touch of local design and a soundtrack of waves and soft island music.
Castaway Cay’s trails are flat and scenic, winding past an observation tower where you can see the ship docked against the horizon. Lookout Cay offers cultural stops along its trails—ideal for families looking to combine leisure with learning. Either way, biking is a fantastic way to see more of the island.
Snorkel gear, paddleboards, water bikes, float tubes—there’s something for everyone. Castaway’s snorkeling lagoon is stocked with Disney surprises underwater, perfect for little adventurers. Lookout Cay focuses more on natural encounters and peaceful paddling.
Castaway offers classic beach activities like stingray encounters, banana boat rides, and parasailing. At Lookout Cay, excursions lean into Bahamian culture—expect artisan markets, island storytelling, and lively Junkanoo parades. It’s a great way to introduce kids to a new culture in a fun and accessible way.
Both islands offer private cabanas for rent that come with loungers, stocked fridges, shade, and your own slice of beachfront paradise. They’re ideal for multi-gen families who want a home base and extra comfort. Book early—they sell out quickly.
Whether you’re looking for action-packed adventure or a peaceful recharge, Disney’s private islands offer the best of both worlds. For our family, they’re the ultimate vacation moment—Annabelle is giggling in the waves, I’m finally sitting still with a drink in hand, and we’re all completely in the moment.
