The holidays are supposed to be magical.
Twinkling lights. Warm cookies. Time together.
But for many parents—especially moms—it feels more like a race to the finish line. You’re juggling school concerts, gift lists, and holiday cards, trying to make it all special… while slowly unraveling under the pressure of it all.
And then someone suggests a Disney trip.
In December.
Cue the panic.
But here’s the thing: a holiday Disney vacation can be a gift—one that brings your family closer, one that you remember forever. You just need to plan it like a pro (and avoid the chaos that traps so many first-timers).
I’ve helped hundreds of families create unforgettable holidays at Disney, and I’ve done it myself—on Christmas morning, sipping coffee under a tree we shipped from Amazon and set up in our resort villa. My daughter still talks about it.
So if you’re dreaming of magic but dreading the stress, let me walk you through exactly how to make it happen—without turning into the Grinch.
It’s easy to get swept up in the logistics—but start by imagining the feeling.
Waking up to the soft glow of castle lights reflected in the lagoon. Watching your kids’ eyes light up as they see Santa Goofy in the parade. Strolling through the Grand Floridian’s gingerbread-scented lobby while holding your partner’s hand, completely present.
When you anchor the trip in those moments, it becomes easier to build a plan that supports them.
Let’s get real: most people think, “No one travels at Christmas. It must be quiet.”
Spoiler alert—it’s not.
Christmas week is one of the busiest times of the year at Walt Disney World. That means longer lines, more congestion, and service teams stretched thin.
But that doesn’t mean you can’t have a peaceful, meaningful experience. It just means you need to manage expectations and plan smarter. The crowds are part of the season—but so is the magic. And when you know what to expect, you can embrace the best of both.
If you’re imagining cozy mornings in matching pajamas, cocoa by the fire, and space to breathe—don’t overlook where you’re staying.
Staying onsite has its perks: early entry, easier access to Lightning Lanes, and no rental car to navigate. You’ll be better positioned for early mornings, especially with Premier Access or Genie+.
Offsite rentals are another great option—especially for multi-gen families or anyone craving space and flexibility. We work with vetted, service-first property partners (unlike some online platforms where hosts can cancel last minute). Many even offer concierge-style experiences like private character visits, in-home chefs, cooking classes, or yoga sessions.

During one holiday trip, I ordered a cheap artificial tree off Amazon and shipped it to our Disney resort. We set it up in our room and decorated it with mini ornaments and Mickey-themed garlands. It wasn’t extravagant, but it was ours. My daughter still talks about waking up and opening a few little gifts before heading off to the Magic Kingdom.
Think about what makes the holidays feel special to your family—and build your accommodations around that.
One year, we traveled as a full family—before anyone had kids. My youngest brother looked at the schedule and said, “Why does 7 a.m. exist?” But by 10 a.m., we had walked onto Peter Pan’s Flight, Big Thunder, Pirates, and Haunted Mansion. We had breakfast at Be Our Guest, watched the holiday parade at noon, and walked out just as the lines ballooned past 90 minutes. That is why 7 a.m. exists.
Early mornings mean cooler weather, shorter lines, and more breathing room. You’ll beat the crowds—and be sipping cocoa by the time the masses arrive.
Yes, Disney is expensive during the holidays. But if there’s ever a time to splurge on the conveniences that make a trip smoother, this is it.
Wait times can hit 2+ hours for popular rides. Even with a solid touring plan, the sheer volume of guests makes Lightning Lane, Premier Access, and VIP Tours incredibly valuable. These aren’t indulgences—they’re tools for making the most of your limited time.
Think of it this way:
Here’s a breakdown of the current options:
Choosing the right service level depends on your priorities—and your stress tolerance.
This is true year-round, but never more than at Christmas. The lines are longer, the transportation is busier, and even servers and Cast Members are stretched thinner.
Instead of trying to ride every ride and see every show, I encourage families to pick their top three must-dos for the day. Plan for those. Let the rest be flexible. Maybe it’s the holiday parade. Maybe it’s Jingle Cruise. Maybe it’s just catching snow fall on Main Street after dinner.
And remember: some of the best magic happens outside the parks.
When most people think “Disney trip,” they think four parks and go-go-go.
But during the holidays, the real magic is in the in-between.
Take a horse-drawn carriage ride at Fort Wilderness. Hop on the Monorail and explore the stunning gingerbread displays at the resorts. Let your kids decorate cookies while you enjoy a glass of wine. Book an afternoon painting class or sit down to tea at the new Cake Bake Shop. Those quiet moments often become the most memorable ones.
Wilderness Lodge is one of my favorite places to escape to. Cozy up by the fire, grab lunch at the lakeside Geyser Point, and take in the decorations that make it feel like a mountain lodge snow globe.
If you’re looking to take your trip from magical to unforgettable, consider investing in a truly unique experience that your kids will talk about for years.
Maybe it’s a fireworks cruise, where you watch the show from the water with cocoa and blankets. Maybe it’s Savor the Savanna, a private safari with a gourmet meal inside Animal Kingdom. These moments help you escape the crowds and sink into the magic in a way the regular park day just can’t match.
These don’t need to be daily splurges—but one extra-special moment like this? Worth every penny.
Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party typically runs through mid-December, but if you’re visiting the week of Christmas, you’ll see the parade and fireworks in the parks without needing a party ticket.
EPCOT hosts the Festival of the Holidays, a beautiful celebration of seasonal traditions from around the world. It’s one of my favorites—especially the storytellers and the holiday kitchens.

Don’t assume holiday offerings are everywhere. They shift based on the week and the park, and many require reservations. That’s why working with someone who knows how to navigate them (hi! 👋) makes all the difference.
Planning a Disney trip at the busiest time of year isn’t the time to DIY or rely on a Facebook group.
This is the time to enlist an expert. Someone who knows which experiences need to be booked 60 days in advance. Who can build a custom plan for your family and be there with emergency backup if something changes.
When you work with Showcase the World, we make sure your holiday trip feels like a gift—to your family and to yourself.
If you’re surprising your kids, don’t just tell them—make it a moment.
Wrap a pair of Mickey ears or custom tees. Send them on a scavenger hunt to find a boarding pass. Bake Mickey-shaped cookies and leave a note under the tree.
