Wishing you could get out and travel…but can’t?
Eager to introduce the magic of travel to your littles?
Wondering what to do all summer now that distance learning has ended? There are so many around the world activities and travel theme crafts to spark wanderlust from home.
I created Activity Guides so your kids don’t have to miss out on the life-changing experiences that come with traveling to a new country, and witnessing everything a different culture has to offer even though we are facing travel restrictions. Plus, you can relax knowing that you’ve got specific plans to keep your children busy.
READ A BOOK
I love the magic of books. Within just a few minutes you can be transported to another world. Reading books set around the world is great for prepping your kids of any age for an upcoming trip or just to teach them a broad worldview. In my new Activity Guides I include reading lists with suggested reading based on your child’s age.
WATCH A MOVIE
Your family can escape to an exciting destination from the comfort of your couch with a little movie magic. There have been so many movies that have inspired my own wanderlust over the years. Do you think Salzburg would be on my bucket list if it weren’t for the Sound of Music? Simply reverse that, look for some movies about or filmed in your destination. Travel Mamas has a great list of 15 Travel Movies for Kids. Have older kids or looking for a romantic travel date night I love this list by Full Suitcase.
You could also binge watch some travel documentaries. Many Travel Channel, PBS, and BBC docuseries are now available on Netflix or Prime Video. My favorites are Rick Steve’s Europe, Samantha Brown’s Places to Love, and Somebody Feed Phil.
EXPERIENCE IMPORTANT PLACES
This is a little harder to do from home, but with so many places adapting to the new climate, many tourist destinations have made videos or other virtual exhibits available.
CRAFT
Whenever I visit a new destination, I always like to take a detour from the main street filled with souvenir shops and find a local market. You can usually find some incredible items handmade by local artisans. I love to ask them about their craft and its history. In most cases, I learn that their techniques have been in their family for generations. When traveling with children I love to find a location where they have a demonstration or hands on activity where you can participate in the craft as it tells such a wonderful story about the culture and the people. You can easily recreate this at home, in a lot of cases with craft supplies you already have.
MAKE A MEAL
Travel and eating are one of life’s greatest matches. To be honest, it is one of the reasons I love to travel so much, and one of my priorities when I get to my destination. Sharing a meal with a local is one of the best ways to get to the heart of a city. So what better way to celebrate your trip than by trying a new recipe. You can also take online cooking classes such as Nonna Live, where you’ll learn to make classics from an Italian grandma. If you want kids to enjoy ethnic food, you need to expose them to it frequently. It’s one of the best benefits of traveling with kids while they are young. I think it is fun learning about the places certain foods come from and the history of the dish.
